City Within A City: U Street Walking Tour

This Indigenous People’s Weekend, Washington Walks is offering a series of guided tours that bring DC’s neighborhoods and stories to life. From the bustling streets of U Street and Columbia Heights to the historic landscapes of Rock Creek Park, Georgetown, and Walter Reed, each tour invites you to experience the city’s full, complex history.

Join professional tour guide David Kaplan on this historic U Street tour. For the first half of the twentieth century, the U Street neighborhood inspired and sustained the rich social, civic, and cultural life of DC’s African American community. Until 1920, when New York’s Harlem overtook it, Washington, DC could claim the largest urban Black population in the United States. Explore the enclave that was shared by Black intellectuals, business leaders, and families of all economic levels. The businesses they owned and the houses they lived in are featured on this walk.
